THE HAGUE, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Inter Milan defeated Feyenoord 2-0 in Rotterdam on Wednesday in the first leg of its UEFA Champions League round of 16 matchup, with the return leg scheduled for next week in Milan.
With more than 50,000 spectators, De Kuip stadium was at full capacity for the match between the fourth-place team in the Dutch Eredivisie and the current leader of Italy's Serie A.
The home team faced a long list of injuries, forcing coach Robin van Persie to adjust his lineup. Despite Feyenoord's hard work, the lack of quality was evident.
Inter took the lead in the 38th minute when Marcus Thuram superbly finished a cross from Nicolo Barella at the far post. Five minutes after halftime, Inter doubled its lead with Lautaro Martinez smashing.
Feyenoord midfielder Jakub Moder hit the crossbar before Inter was awarded a penalty after Jeyland Mitchell brought down Thuram. Inter failed to extend its lead when Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther saved Piotr Zielinski's penalty.
Despite a late opportunity for Ayase Ueda, Feyenoord had few chances to mount a comeback. The return leg takes place next Tuesday. ■
